Gambling Awareness for Non-League Football

Free gambling awareness workshops for non-league clubs.

Gambling harms in non-league football —it's time to act.

Problem gambling isn’t just a problem for league football players. It also affects the lives of many young players in our non-league clubs.

For the team, problem gambling can lead to absenteeism, lateness for training, lateness on match days and poor performance levels.

However, for the player, the consequences can be more severe and can include financial debts, relationship breakdowns and mental health issues.

How Red Card can help

Red Card can help you support your young players by delivering free gambling awareness workshops.

These 90-minute workshops are aimed at 16-25 year old semi-pro footballers and those who work with them, including managers and coaches.

Workshops are delivered at club premises in London, the South East and the Midlands. We can also deliver sessions online.

Workshops are delivered by experienced presenters used to speaking to young people, with real-lfe experience of gambling addiction.

We also provide information packs for attendees, who will receive a CPD-accredited certificate.

The Football Non-League Gambling Awareness Project

Our research found that a proportion of young non league players (16-25) are problem gambling, and we have received a number of emails from non-league club managers and chairman expressing their concerns.

The Gambling Commission has therefore funded a two-year pilot project to investigate and address the issue.

Thanks to their funding, non-league clubs can now benefit from our free educational workshops. For the moment, these are available for clubs located in London, the Home Counties and the Midlands.

[Testimonial extract] As an ex professional and semi-professional footballer, who is now lucky enough to work with young players in football, I fully understand the temptations and the culture surrounding gambling in everyday walks of life. Therefore, educating young people about the issues associated with gambling and the impact this can have, not only on the individual themselves, but on friends, family and work colleagues is absolutely essential...

The literature provided by Tony is superb and offers a visual for participants to take home and share with family members. The information includes advice and guidance on how to recognise gambling habits and how best to implement strategies to overcome such problems...

I strongly recommend the ‘Red Card Gambling Support Project’ workshop to players, management, coaches, staff and fans of other football clubs (both semi-professional AND professional), as well as education providers including schools, 6th forms, colleges and universities across the country.
