Improving Outcomes for Women & Ethnic Minority Communities

Funded by Gamble Aware, this project is working to address inequalities in the gambling-related help available to these two groups.

About the project

The overall aim of the project is to reduce the inequalities experienced relating to gambling harms for women and people from ethnic minority communities.

Funded by Gamble Aware, the project aims to:

  • Remove stigma related to problem gambling amongst ethnic minority groups.
  • Highlight gambling harms within ethnic minority groups and women.
  • Highlight the rise in the number of  women gambling.
  • Raise awareness of gambling harms within the African communality
  • Raise awareness of gambling harms within the South Asian community.
  • Raise awareness of gambling harms within the Caribbean community.
  • Raise awareness of gambling harms within other ethnic minority groups, including Hindu, Muslim, and East European communities.
  • Encourage open discussion around gambling harms and remove the shame attached to problem gambling.

To reach these aims, Red Card will:

  • deliver gambling awareness workshops, both online and in-person.
  • collaborate with various sectors to reach our target audience.

Why women & ethnic minority groups need this project

Research provided by Gamble Aware shows that there are “significant gaps in service provision” for members of both of these groups.

For a number of reasons, problem gambling messaging and support does not reach these communities so well as others.

In addition, members of ethnic minority groups are statistically significantly less likely to talk to friends and family if they are worried about their gambling (56% vs. 63% of the white British majority group).

Red Card is determined to address these inequalities by providing accessible, lived-experience messaging to members of these communities.
